A graphic depiction of a collision event recorded in 2012 in the ATLAS detector in which a Higgs boson candidate was identified. A 3D model of the detector in shown in grey. The particles resulting from the putative Higgs decay are shown as the red lines, and are muons. That they are muons is inferred from the fact that they penetrated through to the outside of the detector. Also visible are yellow lines corresponding to other particles produced in the proton‐proton collisions, and various colored boxes denoting detector elements where an energy deposit was measured. The inset in the upper left part of the graphic shows a zoom of the collision point where several proton collisions have been identified and marked as solid circles.
