The longitudinal velocity compression of a supersonic atomic beam (mean velocity v 0 ; initial velocity spread Δ v i ) by light pressure from two counterpropagating laser fields is studied. A Monte‐Carlo simulation shows that the final velocity ratio v 0 /Δ v f can exceed 1000 in a simple and compact experimental setup.
