A microscopic model for describing the dielectric‐metal transition in hydrogen is derived with the help of methods of statistical mechanics. The Hamiltonian corresponds formally to the so‐called transverse Ising model. Taking from literature numerical values for certain parameters one may calculate the critical temperature T c above which any jump‐like change at the phase transition vanishes. T c should be in the range of 6…9 · 10 3 K which has consequences for the internal structure of the giant planets Jupiter and Saturn.
