The influence of a two‐photon‐absorber placed into the laser resonator in addition to the saturable one‐photon‐absorber, on the process of picosecond pulse generation is investigated theoretically. The effect of the two‐photon‐absorber on the shape of a pulse emerging from a given initial pulse after some hundred round trips through the resonator is studied numerically on the basis of a rate equation approach. As a result, it is shown that for properly chosen parameters the pulse length will be reduced compared with the case that no two‐photon‐absorber is present. Moreover, the two‐photon‐absorber may improve the reproducibility (concerning the pulse length) of the generated pulses.
