We consider an evacuated tangential reactor beam tube. Recoil protons from neutron decay originate near the core and have to pass two circular holes to reach an electric spectrometer, where the shape of the proton spectrum is to be measured with a relative accuracy of 0.5%. Ambient magnetic fields will be reduced by magnetic shielding. The magnetic field in a shielding tube whose permeability deteriorates in time due to neutron irradiation, and the electric field due to secondary electrons produced by gamma rays, are estimated. Space charge compensation is taken into account. The changes in transmission due to transverse and longitudinal magnetic and electric fields and due to proton scattering in the residual gas produced by reactor irradiation are calculated.
