The reaction Mg 25 ( d , α)Na 23 has been studied at bombarding energies between 1.5 and 2.5 MeV. Excitation functions for the ground and the lowest six excited states were measured at laboratory angles of 120°, 140° and 160°. The energy resolution in the measurements was better than 10 keV. Fluctuations in these cross‐sections were analysed on the basis of the ERICSON theory. The coherence width of the compound nucleus Al 27 (with excitation energy 19 MeV) averaged over all transitions has been found to be 29 keV. From the analysis of the probability distributions of fluctuations. the number of independent magnetic substates was found to be less than that predicted by the theory. Numerous group‐cross correlation functions for ( d , p ) and ( d , α) reactions on Mg 25 were analysed.
