Abstract The description of rotational states of deformed nuclei by the cranking model yields an energy spectrum E = ω 2 θ/2 wich is continuous in angular velocity ω. Another approach given by PEIERLS and YOCCOZ for description of rotational states projects out, of the wave function of the deformed nucleus eigenfunctions of angular momentum. The errors of this method are discussed and removed using the solution of the cranking model (“pushing” model) in the case of translation. In the case of rotation in three dimensions this improved approach leads to a discrete spectrum of the form with the moment of inertia θ c following from the self‐consistent cranking model. Also one gets preferred angular velocities.
