Using the method of MORITA and the ionic solution theory of FRIEDMAN, the free energy of a system of nuclei and electrons is represented by a convergent cluster expansion. The n ‐th term of this expansion is given by the screened SLATER sum of the n body problem. The SLATER sum of two particles is calculated quantummechanically for bound states ( E ≳ − kT ) and classically for free states ( E ≲ − kT ). The second virial coefficient and the SAHA equation for a hydrogen plasma are derived. Long range, short range and high orbit divergencies are avoided.
