The definition of coupling constants, through residues of one‐particle singularities in the amplitude A ( s, t ) for a process a + b → c+d with an SU (3)‐invariant S ‐matrix leads to relations between coupling constants if one uses known SU (3)‐properties of a, b, c, d and of the one‐particle intermediate states responsible for the singularities. The relations are derived without reference to Lagrangian field theory. It is shown however that they agree with those obtained from an SU (3)‐invariant Langrangian.
