Recent measurements by Pohl and Walker have shown that the thermal conductivity of some insulating crystals (alkali halides) which are doped with certain impurity centers, exhibits a distinct resonance indentation in the temperature behaviour. This requires an additional new relaxation time which is no longer monotonic and may be ascribed to non‐elastic scattering of the phonons at localized modes. In the following, the relaxation time of the threequantum process ( k ) + ( k ′) = ( s ), which is symmetric in both involved phonons, is calculated. A preliminary comparison of the theoretical results with the experimental data seems to indicate that these processes are the only essential ones for monatomic impurity centers.
