A fluorescence photomicrograph showing mitochondria in a human neuroblastoma cell line, SH‐SY5Y. The nuclei of the cells are stained blue with DAPI and the mitochondria are stained gold with a combination of mitotracker red and antibody against ssbp1, a single‐stranded DNA binding protein that is necessary for replication of mitochondrial DNA. Green punctate structures may indicate the presence of mitochondrial nucleoids. Mutations in SSBP1 may result in autosomal dominant optic atrophy with variable degree retinal degeneration.
