A survey of blood glucose levels in six Solomon Islands populations may support the hypothesis that susceptibility to diabetes is almost absent among non‐Austronesian‐speaking Melanesians regardless of their level of modernization. Among Austronesian‐speaking Melanesians, however, diabetes is emerging. Differences in prevalence rates of diabetes between Austronesians and non‐Austronesian speakers in this survey are significant ( P < .0001).
