The diagnosis of an orthodontic case includes not only an assessment of present structure and function but estimates of the extent to which further natural growth is to be expected. This natural growth may assist manipulative treatment; its absence may indicate a need for surgical correction. Estimates of facial growth potential, while not precise, are assisted greatly by assessments of skeletal maturity.
