Sulfur dioxide surrogates have been shown to offer a number of advantages over the direct use of gaseous sulfur dioxide, often allowing lower stoichiometries and simpler experimental set‐ups to be employed. Over the last few years these surrogates have revitalized interest in sulfur dioxide chemistry. In their Focus Review on page 602, Edward J. Emmett and Michael C. Willis discuss the development of a number of different surrogates and show how they have been used to re‐explore existing transformations, as well in the development of novel chemistries for the synthesis of sulfonyl‐derived functional groups.
