Since the early reports of the deleterious health effects of asbestos first appeared in the British literature, the paucity of information on dust levels has been decried. Research into archival material reporting various methods of assessing asbestos dust levels in British factories during the 1930s indicates that these levels were high indeed. © 1993 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.
