In the March 2000 issue of the Journal, Gennaro et al. present data on lung tumors among Italian oil refinery workers as part of their analysis showing that refinery maintenance workers have a higher risk of lung tumors compared to several different internal and external reference groups. I wish to comment on several aspects of the study which to me raise questions about the choice of the internal reference group, as well as the data presented on maintenance workers.
