This report describes a case of HLADR+, CD34‐ acute undifferentiated leukemia (AUL) diagnosed in an 18‐year‐old male. A definition of AUL and a system for its classification are proposed on the basis of the current state of knowledge about phenotypic features of AUL cells and their clonal counterparts that exist during early stages of normal hematopoiesis. © 1992 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.
