Highlights Research risks and benefits are typically considered in relation to individual research participants. Research may also involve risks and benefits to contexts such as groups, systems, and society. We discuss strategies for balancing individual and contextual risks/benefits using a case example. We explain how risks and benefits can be analogous across levels of analysis. We demonstrate how changing risks/benefits at one level affects risks/benefits at other levels.
