In this work, we present a robust and efficient approach to solve the general nonlinear, multicomponent rate equation model. It uses the finite element (with quadratic elements) method for the bulk-phase equations and the orthogonal collation method for the particle-phase equations. The resulting ordinary differential equations are solved with implicit Gear's stiff method. Our code is capable of simulating the three major modes of chromatography, frontal, elution, displacement, and multistage operations accurately and efficiently.
