The kinetics of the esterification of n‐butyl alcohol with acetic acid has been studied experimentally in concentrated solutions at near ambient temperature in the presence of a sulphuric acid catalyst and the rate constants for the forward and reverse reaction determined. The rate data obtained from the homogeneous system has been applied to analyse the performance of a batch‐extractive reactor using n‐heptane as solvent. The rate of mass transfer of the ester was found to be significant and when introduced in a model of the reaction process gave good agreement with the experimental results.
