The absorption rate of SO 2 from a gas mixture of SO 2 and N 2 into pure water, HCl, and NaCl solutions has been measured at 25°C in a continuous stirred vessel with an unbroken gas‐liquid interface. The rates of the liquid‐phase mass transfer are accurately modeled by the theory of surface renewal with the instantaneous, reversible hydrolysis of dissolved SO 2 . The theory and results are applicable to SO 2 absorption from waste gases.
