The inertial interception mechanism of particle‐fiber collision in fibrous filters is described. The main mechanisms by which particles are retained in filters together with the effect of a number of operating parameters are discussed. The effect of particle size, gas velocity, relative humidity, and filter loading on the retention efficiency of large particles (> 5μ) is investigated experimentally.
