Abstract The quasilinearization algorithm is examined as a means of determining the optimal control of a nonlinear tubular reactor system with state constraints. It is shown that the use of penalty functions in an unconstrained algorithm can effectively solve the constrained problem. The method is quadratically convergent to the optimal control and seems more successful than methods which require gradients in the computation.
