A method previously developed is applied to the problem of transient control of a distributed parameter process. Computational difficulties prevelent in most optimization techniques are largely avoided, which suggests applicability to computer control of large transients. The use of such a control to improve the transient performance of a tubular reactor model is examined in detail. Numerical examples are given to demonstrate the criterion for control and the results are discussed.
