An approximate solution to the problem of freezing of an isotropic, semi‐infinite slab is proposed for the situation where Newton's cooling at the surface of the slab applies. Comparison with the existing exact solution shows the approximate solution to be practical. The heat‐balance integral method is used with the assumptionof linear temperature distribution in the frozen zone and of a parabolic temperature profile in the liquid zone. The final expression for the depth of solidification, however, seems to be only little affected by the particular temperature profiles chosen.
