Cover illustration. Three solution approaches for CAPI are highlighted. Approach A employs a rule‐based method where the number of unit operations is decreased until no further reduction is feasible. Approach B creates a building‐blocks based representation of the problem and employs optimization techniques to find the optimal PI alternative. Approach C employs a hybrid scheme; first the representation of a reference process is changed from unit operations to phenomena via tasks; second, the identified phenomena are combined to find new PI alternatives.
