ne may imagine that an analysis of the immune system would be immune from chemical engineering analysis. This Perspective shows how methods from statistical mechanics and computer simulation can be used to construct quantitative models of limitations in the immune system. Ap- plications to dengue fever, which strikes 100 million people each year and is one of the most important human viral dis- eases, and cancer are given. Our challenge is to translate the understanding that these models provide into strategies, treat- ments, and the large-scale commercial production of vaccines and therapeutics.
