A strategy is introduced to decouple the optical absorption and electronic transport processes required for operation of oxide photoelectrodes in photoelectrochemical cells. Results indicate optical absorption at visible wavelengths and the related water photo‐oxidation efficiencies can be enhanced by spatially segregating the functional impurity concentrations that facilitate their associated physical processes.
