Directing group‐assisted C−H activation has been widely used to control regioselectivity in the field of transition‐metal‐catalyzed C−H functionalization. Common functionalities found in complex organic molecules and/or readily available reagents are the most appealing directing groups, as they circumvent the need to install/remove the directing group. The aldehyde group is an important functional group in many areas including pharmaceuticals and material science. In this review, we present the current state‐of‐the‐art in aldehyde‐assisted, transition‐metal‐catalyzed sp 2 C−H functionalization of arenes.
