Vivid structural colors are produced from metal substrates using a surface structure comprising a thin metal layer coated onto a dielectric film. The top metal layer adjusts the amount of light incident into the dielectric, strengthening the interference effect. Diverse colors are generated by varying the thickness of either the metal layer or the dielectric film, allowing color images to be printed.
