A novel squaraine dye constitutes an unusual nematic mesogen absorbing in the near infrared region. Aligned thin films of the squaraine material are produced by mechanical shearing of the liquid‐crystalline phase and feature remarkable anisotropic absorption of linearly polarized light in the spectral region between 600 and 1000 nm.
