“The weak are the prey of the strong” is the law of the jungle. The microstructures of abalone shell and mantis shrimp feeding appendages are investigated, implying Chinese wisdom that both an impenetrable shield and an all‐piercing spear cannot exist at the same time: the power of “spear” or “shield” is always relative.
