Volcanic ash ingested by jet engines can damage conventional Y 2 O 3 ‐stablized ZrO 2 thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) used to protect engine parts in the hot section. Newer TBCs, one based on Gd 2 Zr 2 O 7 and another composed of ZrO 2 solid solution containing Y 2 O 3 , Al 2 O 3 and TiO 2 , are shown to be highly resistant to such damage from Eyjafjallajökull volcano ash by Nitin P. Padture and co‐workers on p. 2419 . Cover photo of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano eruption provided by Peter Greenfield, who took the image from an airplane on May 6th, 2010.
