Ionic self‐assembly is used as a convenient process to template luminescent smectic and columnar liquid‐crystalline phases from ionic Alq 3 complexes. The complexes are soluble in organic solvents, transparent, and luminescent films can be obtained by slow evaporation or spin‐coating.
