Polarization engineering in thermal radiation is demonstrated by use of metallic photonic crystals, which enhance thermal radiation at specific frequencies with a high degree of polarization up to 0.5. The strong absorption induced by greatly reduced group velocity for a certain polarization is the underlying physical reason for this phenomenon.
