In addition to the well known ferroelastic domains formed by deformation twinning in rhombohedral perovskites, a monoclinic structure is observed by transmission electron microscopy in LaCoO 3 ‐based materials. The monoclinic domains consist of a one‐dimensional superstructure corresponding to doubling or tripling of the pseudo cubic unit cell due to twinning at the atomic scale, as shown in the figure.
