Photorefractive chiral smectic A and C phases known to date are not intrinsically photoconducting, but contain a light sensitizer dissolved in the bulk. In this work, the first example of a single‐component smectic mesophase (structure shown in Figure) which exhibits photorefractive behavior without any doping is presented. It is also shown that the observed photorefractive performance is larger than that previously reported for doped systems.
