Monodisperse colloids have found a wide range of technolgoical applications, in fields as diverse as ceramics, pigments, and catalysis. Recent work in analyzing the mechanism of formation of the particles is reviewed, and the facotrs influencing the size and shape of the colloids, such as the SiO 2 particles shown in the Figure, are discussed.
