A new perovskite‐related compound , YBaCo 2 O 5 , is reported, which has a basic structure which is tetragonal and isomorphous with YBaCuCoO 5 . Excess oxygen can be introduced into the anionic sites in the yttrium layer, an effect which could be important in the development of the material as a redox catalyst and a charge carrier reservoir in high‐ T c superconductors as part of a superlattice formed with a superconducting phase. The preparation of the new material and the analysis of its structure are reported.
