Materials for hip joint replacements have to satisfy many requirements, some of which appear to be contradictory. How the materials and components used in the past have withstood the wear of ten years or more in the body is reviewed in this article. The dangers of ignoring “side effects” and relying on just one technique, which may cause problems in the long term, are discussed. Potential sources of future trouble are also identified.
