Research News/Biomaterials Highlights IX : Materials with active bone‐bonding ability have found applications in medicine for coatings of, for example, load‐bearing dental or orthopedic implants. These bioactive materials, which are based on calcium‐phosphate‐containing glasses of glass ceramics or Caphosphate‐ceramics, have the problem however that they do not perform well under shear loading. The various materials employed and the factors which affect their performance are discussed.
