Inspired by the responsive chromatophores on the skin of Cephalopods, novel hybrid auxetic chiral mechanical metamaterials are designed and fabricated via 3D printing to achieve dramatic volume change and a unique sequential cell opening mechanism. The new concepts can be applied in designing smart metamaterials for actuation, drug delivery and color change for camouflage.
