Two new methods enabling the detection of early shear banding in Zr 52.5 Cu 17.9 Al 10 Ni 14.6 Ti 5 alloy (Vit105) before it can be inferred from macroscopic strain measurements are developed. Shear steps created at the sample surface can be detected by drops in open circuit potential as well as by narrow peaks in current density under potentiostatic polarization.
