The architectural changes of a eutectic AlSil2 alloy during heat treatment can be revealed by synchrotron holotomography. The morphology of the eutectic Si after a spheroidisation heat treatment at 540°C during 4h is shown in the figure. The load carrying capacity of different eutectic Si morphologies was studied by in situ neutron diffraction during compression tests. The interconnectivity of Si must be considered to account for the strength exhibited by this alloy. This study bridges the gap between two‐dimensional studies of the binary AlSil2 alloy and three‐dimensional studies of more complex systems.
