Layers of the metastable ceramic HAlO are sensitive to heat: These layers transform to biphasic Al/Al 2 O 3 due to elimination of di‐hydrogen. Using interfering Nd:YAG laser beams, periodic patterns can be produced. By these methods two dimensional structuring is obtained with the characteristics of distinctly different phases and different chemical compositions at periodic places on the layer.
