Drastically reduced cycle times for gas forming of a workpiece made of a superplastic alloy (here, Al alloy 5083) are achieved by lubrication, to be applied not only between the workpiece and the die cavity, but also to the area under the railing. The method allows large volume production of such parts. The Figure shows a top view of a specimen with markings to show material flow and deformation.
