The solidification process of some hypoeutectic aluminum alloys was studied over a wide range of cooling rates. Microsegregation effects were characterized by the minimum concentration of solute found in primary dendrite trunks (see Figure for a typical example), using microprobe analysis, and the fraction of eutectic phases evaluated as a function of the cooling rate. Finally, a non‐equilibrium thermodynamic model of the process, which is able to explain some of the experimental observations, was developed.
