A challenge to current growth theories arises from the comparison of binary and ternary AlSi alloys processed under the same solidification conditions: to explain the phenomena, new concepts on primary spacing, mush evolution, and connective mass transport are needed. The Figure shows an optical micrograph of an AlSiMg alloy, where α‐Al dendrites, silicon lamellae and Mg 2 Si precipitates can be differentiated.
