Developing PVD coating systems with better corrosion resistance leads to a duplex process, consisting of a plasma anodisation and an Al 2 O 3 top coating which can both be performed in a modified commercial PVD unit. The tested specimens were investigated by means of optical microscopy, SEM and EDX. Furthermore a novel immersion technique to determine the time dependent corrosion behavior of coated magnesium alloys is introduced.
