Thixocasting or rheocasting of AZ and AM magnesium alloys continues to be a problematic case in semi‐solid processing. The comparison with the aluminum thixo alloy A 356 shows that the metallurgical and physical properties of the Mg alloy AZ 91 are little compatible with this technology (see Figure for the morphology of the eutectic in AZ 91): The conclusions from this study are of fundamental importance for future developments in this field of research.
